Lori Dunbar of Foxboro said finding those extra special things to spoil her dogs, two Airedale terriers and a Welsh terrier puppy, had been a challenge. She didn't want to continue buying those luxury items on the Internet and, as the Foxboro resident looked around at the dog population in town, and considered the dog park that opened about a year ago, she figured she would be barking up the right tree by opening a boutique selling high-end products for pet owners to lavish on their pooches. And that's exactly what she did. Her Pawsmopolitan boutique, which opened Sept. 25 in Foxboro center, carries collars from Coco Couture with names like Croc Rocks Silver, crafted from patent leather and embossed with a crocodile pattern, and Night at the Disco, a suede- and sequin-adorned collar. There are also cashmere sweaters for canines, spa treatment sprays, exclusive toys, and even a "bakery counter" with all-natural baked doggie treats where dogs are welcome.Make no bones about it, Dunbar is trying to cash in on an industry trend that is expected to generate $40.8 billion this year. And as more people acquire pets and sentiment grows that pets are family members, pet pampering is bound to increase.Sixty-three percent of U.S. households - or 71.1 million homes - reported having pets in 2006, according to a survey by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. The figure was 56 percent in 1988, the first year the group began the survey. That translates to more than 74 million dogs, 88 million cats, 142 million freshwater fish, 13 million reptiles, 16 million birds and 24 million other small animals. Most of the spending will still be for food, followed by veterinary care, supplies and medicine, and pet services such as grooming and boarding. More than $15 billion was spent on pet food alone in 2006; $9.3 billion in supplies and medicine, according to the APPMA.But aside from the necessities, there is a growing trend to treat the newest member of the family just like the other members, and some big-name companies known for outfitting and pampering humans are now offering pet products."Years ago, pets would sleep on the floor," Dunbar noted. Now, canines are placed in the lap of luxury, settling into plush beds. What some people won't do for family members of the furry, feathered or finned persuasion.Upscale shampoos, steak pet treats resembling the kind consumed by humans, designer toys, fancy accommodations and garb for going out on the town or on the "hog" for a ride.Uptownpets.com, which offers "exclusive items for the discerning pet owner," advertises John Paul Pet Shampoo from the co-founder of Paul Mitchell products ($10.)Omaha Steaks offers steak pet treats ($4.99), along with canine cookies ($6).The Harley Davidson dog line has anything from bike attachments for the ride, to "shirts" and spike-like collars. And Old Navy offers toys, including one simulating a musical instrument for dogs, patterned collars and graphic hoodies and T's for canines. Not that everything for pampering a pet has to come with a high price tag. Animal Planet's Web site, among others, has suggestions for make-your-own items to keep a pet fashionable, anything from a collar cover to a pinata.Even newer to the scene is "going green." Worldwise's PoochPlanet and SmartyKat pet beds are made from recycled materials, as are their covers. Now, canines can have their own "green" BarkLounger, in the style of an overstuffed armchair. For felines, there's a a catnip-filled bed called a CatnipConvertible. Then, there are more delicate matters. There's a product called the CatGenie - a self-flushing, self-washing cat box. It took a first prize at the Global Pet Expo. (Cost: $329 online.) For dogs, there is a Doggie Dooley toilet - an in-ground pet waste disposal system that is supposed to work like a miniature septic tank.
